This review is going to be pretty short because the only thing I can really say is I LOVED IT. The story focuses a lot on Olive and Adam's lives outside their romance, making their love story more believable and interesting. Here's why "The Love Hypothesis" is one of my favorite recent romance books:ġ. With all the hype surrounding this new romance read, I couldn't resist picking it up. My standards are high because the best romance novels have the potential to expose readers to authentic and imperfect relationships and offer new topics of discussion without making us feel like it's a story we've already read. I'm a little picky about my romance novels, so giving this read every bit of a five-star review didn't come lightly. After the kiss, Adam and Olive agree to fake a relationship so she can prove to her friend that she's happily dating and he can convince their department that he isn't planning to leave anytime soon. Adam Carlsen, the department's notoriously brutal (but undeniably attractive) professor. In an attempt to convince one of her best friends that she's moved on from an old crush, she impulsively kisses Dr. candidate studying pancreatic cancer at Stanford. "The Love Hypothesis" is about Olive Smith, a third-year Ph.D. On the 4th floor, are two young female roommates, Mimi and Camille. On the Penthouse floor, Sophie Meunier is an older woman whose husband is Jacques Meunier. Jess soon meets the various residents of the building. She finds his wallet containing a metal card and contact information for Theo Mendelson, an editor for The Guardian. On Friday, the Prologue opens with Ben, a journalist, working on a story in his 3rd floor apartment in Paris when someone unlocks his door and attacks him.īen's half-sister Jess, who recently lost her job, shows up shortly afterwards to stay with him and realizes he is missing. Jess finds Ben nearly dead and being kept in the old maids' chambers. Jacques attacked Ben, but Jacques was stopped and stabbed by Mimi (the daughter who was infatuated with Ben). Ben was investigating and was found out by Jacques (the father). She explores the building which has an extensive wine cellar and meets the various other residents of the building.Īs she investigates what happened to Ben, Jess realizes that most of the residents of the building are one family and that they make their money running an illegal sex-trafficking club (that masquerades as an exclusive club selling expensive wines). The two-paragraph version: Jess arrives to stay with her half-brother Ben at his apartment in Paris, but Ben is missing. What he had to say was always stimulating, always worth reading, even if-actually especially if-you did not agree with the basic argument he was making. As Beatrice de Graaf puts it in her essay here, Schroeder “stood at the apex of sound, traditional diplomatic history.” He went into the sources in great depth, thought hard about the fundamental issues he was concerned with, and made his text speak very effectively to those issues. Scott’s term, an “historian’s historian,” a scholar whose mastery of his craft was deeply admired throughout the profession. He also published a large number of articles, some of which were quite influential, dealing mostly with European great power politics in the century and a half before the outbreak of the First World War, but covering other subjects as well. In the course of his long career Schroeder wrote four major books: The Axis Alliance and Japanese-American Relations, 1941 (1958) Metternich's Diplomacy at Its Zenith, 1820-1823 (1962) Austria, Great Britain, and the Crimean War: The Destruction of the European Concert (1972) and his masterpiece, The Transformation of European Politics, 1763-1848 (1994). Schroeder, emeritus professor of history and political science at the University of Illinois and perhaps the most distinguished diplomatic historian of his generation, died last December at the age of 93. The synopsis sounds like something that’s been written over and over, but Kade made it her own- she fleshed out the characters to well, the sequence of events, etc- and I LOVED her writing style! And yes, it was fast and light, but Kade provided enough for the plot to carry itself. I thought I was going to breeze through it because it’ll be a no-brainer kind of book.
